The active ingredient in piriton syrup is chlorpheniramine or Chlorphenamine maleate.

Piriton liquid syrup also contains E218 E214 and E216 preservatives, sucrose, peppermint oil, glycerol, ethanol, tingle flavour and water.

This liquid piriton usually comes in a bottle of 150mls, and each 5mls of the syrup has the euivalent of 1mg of piriton in it. This medicine is made by GSK Consumer Health.

Uses of Piriton

This liquid form of piriton for children is used in the relief and treatment of the following conditions:

  • symptoms of hayfever in children
  • Hives and Nettle Rashes
  • Insect bites
  • Itching associated with chicken pox
  • Food allergies
  • Drug allergies
  • General
  • Itching
  • Prickly heat rash
  • First aid in severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis before the arrival of immediate medical help or ambulance

If you or your child develop an allergic rash with associated swelling of the lips or tongue or wheezing or difficulty in breathing, or even collapse, it is important that you call for urgent medical help. Piriton alone will not treat that. This could be serious.

Dose of Piriton Syrup

As said above, piriton syrup is mainly for children, though it can be used by every member of the family in the right amount or dose.

The following is the recommended dose for piriton or chlorphenamine oral solution:

  • Children aged 1 to 2 years, take 2.5mls of syrup twice daily. Such child should not be given more than 5mls of piriton liquid 2mg) in any 24 hour period.
  • 2 to 5 years, take 2.5mls 4 to 6 times a day. Maximum allowed dose for this age group is 15mls or 6mg in a day.
  • 6 to 12 years old children should take 5mls of piriton liquid syrup 4 to 6 times daily. They should take no more than 30mls maximum in any given 24 hour period. This is the maximum dose allowed.
  • Children above 12 years of age and adults can take 10mls of piriton syrup 4 to 6 times daily. The maximum daily dose of piriton for this age group would be 60mls in total (that is 24mg) in any 24 hours.

Side Effects of Piriton

The side effects of piriton include

  • Drowsiness
  • Hyperactivity in children (sleeplessness, irritability, nightmares and rarely convulsion in some children. These side effects are very rare though, but if they occur while on piriton, you should report this to your doctor).
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry mouth
  • Allergic reaction - yes.

Piriton is used in the treatment of allergic reactions, but in some people, it in itself, can precipitate an allergic reaction. This allergy might be to the active ingredient chlorphenamine, or other components of the syrup like the E preservatives.
  • Haemolytic anaemia - this could lead to passage of deep yellow or dark urine. This side effect is very rare.

The above listed side effects are quite uncommon. The only side effect of piriton frequently seen is sedation or drowsiness.

Precautions

When using chlorphenamine malate syrup, be sure not to take it with other medicines bought over the If you or your child has diabetes, be careful with the use of piriton syrup because of the sucrose content. Sticking to the treatment dose should be okay, especially in younger children. It is when large amount is taken like 10mls 4 to 6 times a day, as in older children and adults that the amount of sucrose in the syrup might become an issue in some diabetics.
